U.S. doctors may be ordering too many colonoscopies to check patients whose colorectal polyps have already been removed. Most patients with benign polyps or other low-risk growths in the intestine need monitoring only once every three to five years or not at all. But a survey in the Annals of Internal Medicine finds that many doctors perform follow-up colonoscopies more frequently, which puts patients at further risk for tears in the colon and other complications.
