MARRIED. SEAN PENN, 35, star of Dead Man Walking, to ROBIN WRIGHT, 29, of Forrest Gump; in a ceremony attended by the couple's two small children; in Santa Monica, California.

BORN. To BILL GATES, 40, head of software giant Microsoft, and wife MELINDA FRENCH, 31, Microsoft mid-level manager; a first child, Jennifer Katharine; in Bellevue, Washington.

INDICTED. JOE WALDHOLTZ, 33, estranged husband of Utah Representative Enid Greene; on 27 counts of bank fraud; in Washington. He was also freed from a Pittsburgh jail after accounting for money entrusted to him for investment by his grandmother. He had spent most of it on himself.

MISSING. WILLIAM COLBY, 76, former CIA director. Daring World War II intelligence operative, controversial overseer of Vietnam-era covert activities, Colby was an ironic choice to restore the CIA's reputation in the post-Watergate era. Hopes that he will be found alive have dimmed since the discovery of his capsized canoe a mile from his Maryland home.

DIED. SITI HARTINAH SUHARTO, 72, wife of Indonesian leader Suharto; of a heart attack; in Jakarta. "Madame Tien" was Suharto's closest adviser--unofficially dubbed "Tien Percent" for the cut she was rumored to receive from government contracts.

DIED. HERBERT BROWNELL, 92, Attorney General under Eisenhower who played a key role in implementing the Supreme Court's desegregation decisions; in Manhattan.
