King for a Day

M.L.K. Day has reached the mountaintop. For the first time, all 50 states officially observed a Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, including holdouts New Hampshire and Arizona (see march in Phoenix, above). Like the civil rights movement itself, King Day will probably always be mired in struggle. New Hampshire's holiday was temporary; a bill making it permanent will be fought out in the state legislature this year.
