Forward Spin

By Janice Castro

PERSONALS

Now that Jerry Brown is in the race, three single men are running for President (Brown has never married; Doug Wilder and Bob Kerrey are divorced). Get set for lots of campaign videos of President Bush and his grandchildren.

FEAR OF FRYING

Call it the Anita Hill syndrome. Last week three women withdrew from testifying before a Senate subcommittee that is examining how sex discrimination keeps women out of the top corporate ranks. The Senate has some fences to mend.

MONSTERS IN A BOX

Hot-selling boxed sets of CDs featuring legends from Bob Dylan to Frank Sinatra have created a desperate desire among pop stars for this new badge of legitimacy. Get ready for overkill: retrospective collections of the Monkees, the Carpenters and Great Speeches of the 20th Century.

YOUTH'S DISAFFECTIONS

Baby Busters just want to be left alone. The Bud Dry campaign appeals to these younger drinkers with its theme "Why Ask Why?" Expect songs and movies about the joy of disengagement.

WORD OF THE WEEK

Toxic is fast becoming the hot-button word. Books include Toxic Parents and Toxic Psychiatry. A USA Today headline last week trumpeted SHE FOUGHT TOXIC RACISM AND WON. Next: toxic ideas. You are what you think.

POP CULTURE RECYCLED

Saturday-morning cartoon shows have featured characters representing Yogi Bear when he was a teen and Roseanne as a little girl. Next February, George Lucas will bring Young Indiana Jones to TV. Look out for a backlash among children tired of hand-me-down heroes.
