McNAMARA'S PORTFOLIO
SOUTH DAKOTA'S Karl Mundt, ranking Republican on the Senate Government Operations subcommittee, told newsmen that the committee would investigate any "personal financial interest" that "people at the Pentagon" might have had in the award of the TFX contract. Mundt specifically excluded Defense Secretary McNamara, later explained: "Everyone knows about McNamara. He's lived in a goldfish bowl ever since he took office. No one questions his self-interest in this matter." But no matter, McNamara took Mundt's comments as an imputation against his honesty, insisted on giving the subcommittee a statement of his financial holdings and those of his wife.
McNamara's statement made fascinating reading. It showed him to be worth $1,278,200--with only $1,305 of that in cash. The McNamaras own three homes (a furnished house in Washington, an unfurnished house and a furnished cabin in Michigan), but their value is offset by "a large bank loan of approximately equal size." In 18 years, when McNamara is 65, the Ford Motor Co. will pay him a pension of about $16,000 a year; the company also owes him about $50,000 in deferred compensation from his days as an executive. The McNamaras have divested themselves of all holdings in companies that do more than $10,000 a year in business with the Defense Department. But McNamara's portfolio, as of Feb. 28, is still pretty impressive:
