Joe & Pom

More than most ex-G.I.s who had married English girls, former Paratrooper Joe Cananzey, of Taunton, Mass., sweated out his separation from his wife. Pam Cananzey, whom Joe had met on a blind date at Nottingham Castle, and wooed in Sherwood Forest, was tubercular. Just how ill she was Joe did not guess until he received a telegram last week: "Pam sinking fast, calling for you."

In desperation, Joe told friends he was too broke to go to England. The Taunton Gazette heard the story, published it. In six days, Taunton citizens raised $2,000 for Joe's plane fare and expenses, and Massachusetts' Congressman Joe Martin hustled through his passport. At week's end, after a flight across the sea, Joe and Pam were together again, if only for a while (see cut).
