Voting Proposition

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a Texas case, last year, that Negroes have a right to vote in Democratic primaries. Five thousand of Atlanta's colored citizens hopefully registered. But none of them voted. White election officials told them, "This primary is for white voters only." Last week, anticipating next September's city primary, Atlanta politicians thought they saw a slicker way around the Supreme Court decision.

The City Democratic Executive Committee simply dropped the word "Democratic" from its title. Then it announced last week that Negroes would be barred from voting.

Last year, to save trouble, only a few Negroes went to the Georgia polls to get the turndown they knew they would get. This time Dr. Austin T. Walden, Negro leader, announced a change of strategy. At Atlanta's primary, Negroes will be urged to go to the polls in large numbers.
