The Separated
Since Pearl Harbor more than 1,163,000 men & women have "separated" from the Army. The separations (the War Department's word for it) came about through death, capture or discharge.
Up to April 1, less than 24,000 separations were caused by death in combat; death by accident had accounted for more than 34,000; number missing and lost by enemy capture: 56,000. By far the largest number of separations were honorable discharges, which have been given to 903,000. For them the War Department has issued a small gold-plated lapel button depicting an eagle flapping its wings.
