Smear

Over the doorway of a Willkie Committee headquarters in Washington hangs a picture of G. O. P.'s nominee (see cut). Last fortnight somebody stoned, smashed the glass. Then egg was smeared on the photograph. Instead of getting a new one, the Willkie Washington Committee's smart Chairman Haven B. Page had a sign put up: "You can smear the picture --you can't smear the man." To Mr. Page last week came a letter: "... I would like to buy another glass and enclose two dollars to pay for it. Many of my co-workers feverently hope Mr. Willkie will be our next President.

"Sincerely yours, Civil Service Employe."
