Election
With lazy indifference Mexicans faced a nation-wide election last week. In Mexico City, a town of over 1,000,000 inhabitants, only 3,000 handed in votes. Everyone seemed certain that the National Revolutionary Party of stocky, able President Lazaro Cardenas would win. They were not mistaken. With the voting booths not yet closed President Cardenas triumphantly gave out that his party had won 160 of the 173 seats in the Chamber of Deputies.
Far from indifferent about the election results was the small but tightly-knit Social Democrat Party which led the opposition to President Cardenas. Thundered Social Democrat Leader Judge Prieto Laurens: "The official party as usual used every means to assure its triumph. . . . A majority of the voting booths were placed in homes of Government party leaders and a mere 10% of the eligible voters was allowed to ballot."
No one blamed President Cardenas personally for these conditions. Even Opposition Candidate Laurens declared that "the honor and good intentions of the President are being shattered against the bad faith of his associates."
