Modest Creed
"For the combating of every form of indecency and the preservation and spread of the virtues of modesty and purity," a League of Modesty was founded two years ago by Roman Catholics in Chicago. Last week this League, headed by a Franciscan named Rev. Celestine Strub, presented a Modest Woman's Creed based upon the preachings of Francesco Cardinal Marchetti-Selvaggiani, Vicar General of Pope Pius XI. Recommended to all good Catholic women, it urges:
"The dress should not be cut lower in front or in back than one or two inches below the little hollow of the throat.
"The sleeves should at least cover the elbows, and the skirt fall far below the knees.
"The stockings should be worn full length and be neither flesh-colored nor transparent.
"The clothing in general should be of such quality and quantity as to conceal rather than reveal the form and the person of the wearer."
