Baton

During the last three weeks, neuritis attacks have crippled Leopold Stokowski and made it necessary for Assistant Arthur Rodzinski to conduct the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra. Last week in Carnegie Hall, he had enough of enforced idleness, made up his mind to disappoint his audience no longer. His right arm in a sling, he gritted his teeth, picked up the baton with his left, conducted the Kaminski "Concerto Grossi" single-and-left-handed. The pain was too great. He had to retire. The audience extended him an ovation. His former wife, Olga Samaroff, able music critic of the New York Evening Post, wrote: "Dr. Rodzinski could not replace Stokowski."
