Enter Hoff

A lean young man with a puckered face stood at the rail of a liner that docked last week in Manhattan. He was Charles Hoff, famed all-around athlete, holder of the world's pole vault record (13 ft. 11 15/16 in.), arriving from Norway to compete in the season's indoor meets. He has never before vaulted indoors, but believes that he can achieve the as yet unrecorded height of 14 ft. He will also compete on board tracks against the best U. S. middle-distance runners. Charles Hoff is the first to arrive of four celebrated European athletes. Others who will compete here this winter are imperturbable Hubert Houben, German sprinter; hirsute Adrian Paulen, Dutch middle-distancer; and George R. Goodwin, British walking champion.
