Chessmen

Following the recent International Chess Match at Moscow (TIME, Nov. 16, Dec. 7) sets of "revolutionary chessmen" are reported to have achieved a popularity which has necessiated their manufacture on a mass-production scale.

The officially sanctioned Soviet chess "king" and "queen" are pieces carved to represent a working man and a peasant woman. The "pawns" bear the insignia of "Pionerki": a political society for children that have not yet reached the age for entry into the Young Communist League.
